Ali Akbar Salehi has been serving as Iran's foreign minister since January 2011. During the years 2009-2011, prior to his appointment as foreign minister, Salehi served as the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran - AEOI, the official Iranian agency in charge of Iran's operations in the nuclear sphere.
In November 2009, due to his involvement as head of the AEOI in Iran's nuclear program, Salehi was added by the European Union to the list of persons subjected to the EU's sanctions against Iran.
