My dad has an original Fisher 500, still in it's cheesy, behemoth wooden console with the old speakers! Not sure if it's a 'B' or 'C' model though. Still has the original tubes (Telefunken), and plays great. Probably needs a good tuneup though in order to preserve function. I remember hooking up a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 10B speakers (back when Polk was truly high end), and being blown away by the fluid, warm, tubelike sound.

Does Audio Research still makes gear? I havent heard from them for a over a decade

They still do. Recently, Bill Johnson retired and he sold the company to an Italian conglomerate that also owns Sonus Faber. They are still located in Minnesota and making tube gear.
