Erik made a shakuhachi style flute for me, out of my own piece of bamboo that I collected on Key West, Florida. I realize this is not an authentic shakuhachi, but too much is made out of this point when the more important thing is it sounds beautiful. Whether listening or playing, a flute by the hand of Erik the Flutemaker is a national treasure.

Great playing! Did you buy the 21 shakuhachi or the concert tuned d? which would is better in your opinion?

Nice playing here. :)
Just waiting to get one myself.

My side blown Shakuhachi is on its way. Very excited. That will be my sixth flute from Erik. His work is amazing. Love my side blown Egyptian as well.

Listen to the sound of Beauty..
There is no words need.
To listen at beauty without thinking or judge is like doing Zen Meditation.
Just Focus to the emptyness in the space, Thats ZEN!

Indeed Erik knows that this is by no means a traditional shakuhachi. Either way he is an amazing flute maker!!! Even though you may say some flutes he makes are a revised or personalized rendition I notice he does that sometimes to keep the cost down. Although it would be interesting to see how much he could make a traditional shakuhachi for. I'll ask and get back to you on that.

Hey Alex, I also own one of Erik's transversal shakuhachi's, but I cannot get the sound that you can. I think I just need lessons though. I assume you were competent in flute playing before you started with the trans shaku. What do you suggest?

as much as i Love shakuhachi , both playing and making, and all the friends ive made through this artform, i've found a good percentage of this particular community to be fickle, pretentious, and quite "anal",not to mention quick to judge and criticize,
dont let the shak-police get ya down ;) noone's going to confuse this with a true shak..
it sounds beautiful and erik's a great dude.i have a bunch of his flutes as well.he got me on my way!

With all due respect, this is just the name he gave this particular flute because it's "similar". He never claims, or is trying to sell this, as the "real thing".
I will quote him again: "... and found it was almost the perfect tuning of the Japanese Shakuhachi but much higher in pitch. I wonder therefore if this is where the shakuhachi began and later crossed over."
Whatever you call it ... the flute still sounds great!

This is what Erik says about it:
About twelve years ago, ancient flutes said to be 9,000 years old were found in China made from the wing bones of cranes. I discovered that one had five holes. I took the dimensions of this one and found it was almost the perfect tuning of the Japanese Shakuhachi but much higher in pitch. I wonder therefore if this is where the shakuhachi began and later crossed over.
Comes in side flute and end blown.

geez, talk about misinformation....that is NOT a shakuhachi!

It's what Erik calls a "Western Shakuhachi", a Shakuhachi-like bamboo flute. Same sort of scale, it's not by any means an attempt to be the real thing which I'm also very familiar with. These flutes will cost much less and not sound exactly the same but beautiful nonetheless.
