fortress / Zitadelle
(a budapestinfo.hu filmje)
XI. Gellérthegy, Bus 27, Tram 18, Website: www.citadella.hu
Built by the Habsburgs in the middle of the 19th-century, the Citadella's hill top position was used to strengthen their hold over Buda's inhabitants after the failed War of Independence between 1848-1849. Since then, the building has been used as a prison camp and an anti-aircraft battery by German forces during World War II.

Still scarred by bullet holes, the building today houses a restaurant, café and a youth hostel (the most inexpensive accommodation in town) while the area around the Citadella commands some of the most breathtaking views of the city. Just a short walk away is the statue of St. Gellért and the Liberation Monument.

  • Because its not true. Buda and Pest were built by ancient hungarians about 900 and then they became one city at about 1800. By the way slovakia was the part of the Great Hungarian kingdom and hungarians built nearly all slovakia....

  • 1945 . Budapest one of the heaviest battles in ww2, 3500, red army soldiers were killed on this spot ,just on the final assault, this and the surrounding var area is witness of intense ,extreme and desperate resistance. 60000 German and Hungarians were killed in the surrounding 4 km,whilst pulling out.Reds probably more killed here as defenders have commanding view, beautiful place,spooky though at night,bunker museum and beer terrace definate must see.

  • I've been there a few days ago. Budapest is beautiful. Greetings from Poland.

    Éljen soká a Lengyel-Magyar barátság! :)

  • Citajto! I see you're angry because all you have is your stolen land and Budapest still belongs to Hungary but calm down and go fuckyourself.

  • bla bla bla.....

    You say on your profile:

    "I hate rasism, chouvignism, antifa"

    But your words are full of shovinism and fascism. You are a rancorous nobody. I want to beleive that the majority of slovak and hungarian people are rational and peaceful. You are not so go and suck your Slota's cock.

  • Ezt valakitől elloptam de:

    SK = Sosem volt Köztársaság
