Timelapse video of the construction of the SSOW - Southern Star Observation Wheel at Waterfront City in Melbourne, Australia. Sequence shows lifting of hub and bearing assembly to completed rim between August 2007 and March 2008. SSOW is the largest observation wheel in the Southern Hemisphere and is comparable with the famous London Eye.

  • EPIC FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIL ahahahahahhaahahah

  • an EPIC FAIL..!!! it was constructed, and operated for almost 2months... before it was faulty and started cracking and had to be pulled back down.... millions and millions of dollars for nothing...!!! and the melbourne government will tell you... they only wanted the giant wheel to compete with Sydney for Icons and tourist... when a ferris wheel is useless in any part of australia.... we have too harsh and damatic weather... besides how unoriginal... to copy London or China... EPIC FAIL!!!!

  • Now we just need a time-laps of it's deconstruction in 2009 :P

Or perhaps we can just play the video backwards lol. @failwheel.

  • Money well spent

  • What a place to build a wheel , its an ugly area offers nothing to Melbourne's waterfront all you get is Rail yards

  • It was shut down indefinitely after structural defects, including buckling and cracks, were detected. The operators initially blamed the 2009 Southeastern Australia heat wave for causing the damage. It is not known when the wheel will reopen.

From wikipedia, it says that engineers working on the wheel discovered the cracks were not caused by the heatwave but rather a problem in the original design. Fourteen cracks have been found in the steel.

  • omg i heard last nite that it wont be working for a year!

  • did you work on it?? plzzz respond :)

  • black balloon junkies
