This 5-step tutorial covers how to share your contact list in Outlook using Office Live Workspace at no cost. Small businesses no longer need to set up an exchange server if they just want to share contacts.
1. Obtain Windows Live ID (passport.net)
2. Obtain Office Live Workspace Account
3. Create Contact list in Office Live Workspace
4. Set up Outlook
(Use gmail if you don't have a POP3 compatible
or IMAP compatible e-mail account)
5. Sync Outlook contacts with Office Live contact list

  • This approach worked great until MS killed the Office Live beta, and replaced it with SkyDrive. How are you sharing contacts now?

  • @ericg0ld Good point. I need to revisit contact sharing. How do you share your contacts?

  • does this method work syncing both ways? for instance can you add a contact in outlook and it show up in windows live? is there a way to sync calendars back and forth?

  • @sandyleecruz123 Yes. The syncing works both ways for me. I haven't tried the calendars yet.

  • @c130bulldawg I haven't yet come up with a good approach. I use Airset for shared calendaring in my small company, and could use their contact sharing function, but it will force me to change the way I store contacts, and I am resisting that. I really liked the fact the Office Live worked within Outlook, and basically gave me an Exchange Server function, without Exchange Server. The fact that it was free was a real bonus, but I might even be willing to pay as much as $10/year for this.

  • interesting, but I have an issue and don't know if you can help. I have a contact list on GMail and would like to have it real time sync with my Exchange hosting account. The calendar sync by google is a greate tool but they don't offer a contact tool as such. do you have any ideas?
