Screenwriter Michael Arndt talks about the major themes present in his Academy Award-winning script for the film "Little Miss Sunshine."

-----

In 2000, screenwriter Michael Arndt had no credits, no agents, no publishing history when he took a year off to write "a saleable script" that got him an agent and a deal and, five years after that, one of the big hits of 2006. A new book, "Little Miss Sunshine: The Shooting Script," details the fascinating behind-the-scenes story of the indie runaway hit with an introduction, afterword, and enlightening scene notes from Arndt. Starring Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano, and Alan Arkin, the film strikes a nerve with everyone who's ever been awestruck by how their muddled families seem to make it after all. Michael Arndt offers a rare insider's look and considered thoughts on one of the film's most prevalent themes, success vs. failure. -- Cody's Books

  • One of the best films i've seen in ages... A VERY clever film. The script. the acting, the timing, the silences, the music, almost perfect.Yes it was very funny however it was also moving, and has such depth. Not one character "trod" on the other. They each had their own space and yet conveyed perfect harmony. I do have my favourites(acting wise),thats human, and they are ; the mothers brother, the son,and the little girl.I am totally impressed! Saluti from Roma.

  • His next film is Phineas and Ferb the movie!

  • Can somebody explain how Richard is the 'reductio ad absurdum' of the idea that society is too focused on winning? This doesn't quite make sense to me.

  • @RachaelDomoLove I've seen this film only twice but in his elemental and moving way is almost perfect to clarify not only the difference between win and lose but also the importance to pass a good time together. I try not to miss any film where Toni Colette participates because of I saw "Muriel's wedding". Saludos from Spain

  • He is actually my inspiration to keep writing my screenplay.

  • @IWEEW Not everyone gets the chance to become higher then poor. I hate when people say that. You don't know what has gone in their lives, what may have stopped them from becoming poor. You tell us (my generation) that we whine, and whine. Not all of us do. Also, Your agreeing that you hate losers? Just because people don't win it doesn't mean they didn't work as hard as everyone else. Next time you want to judge my generation, take a look at who raised us.

  • What I don't understand, is that every adult complains about our generation. (mine) They need to remember they're the ones that raised us. Not all of us wine, I absolutely despise it when people stereotype us. Our country goes around telling us that we are all equal yet Arnold goes and says he hates losers. No one is a loser, just because they lose doesn't mean they didn't work as hard as everyone else. It's ridiculous. So next time you go talking about my generation take a second look.

  • Welcome to CommercialTube.

  • I love this movie and love Toy Story Three! GO MICHAEL!!!!!!

  • @IWEEW The irony of your dim-witted post is of course the fact that you manage to make yourself look like a huge whiner.

You are a product of a sick, sick, sick, sick, sick culture.
