I think you are mistaking a television program for reality. I don't recall from the books him leaving Dan in the car, it was probably just something the director/producer did for simplicity/s sake. Having to maybe re-shoot because of dog issues out in the cold like that, it was easier to just leave the dog in the car, though the dog playing Herriot's beast is very well behaved.
I named a cat after Tristan years ago. He was another blond tom that couldn't stay out of trouble.

In the books he did leave the dog in the car. I love this series too....book or television, both are great.

I think he would be better off without the wind whipping through him though wouldn't he? (dog) I love these books so much!
