There is a big problem with the amount of contact on the mouth of the Icelandic Horse to make him gait. The horse fights the bit, the bit hurts him, the noseband restricts him, the forced frames are unnatural and uncomfortable. Who will stand up for the Icelandic Horse? Who will help to make changes for the Icelandic Horse? Who will help the Icelandic Horse return to being a natural horse?

See the Gerd Heuschmann article:

See the Cavallo article:

There are many ways to ride a horse. With Icelandic Horses, we see a lot of riding by way of equipment. How did such unnatural methods come to be mainstream with such a natural horse?

Let's see if we can get our Icelandic Horses back to natural riding such as shown in this video:

  • wonder if the core reason for this lack of empathy lies in fact that they are meat animals? don't they butcher the culls?

  • and I really agree with kabrov... it's the easiest way to "train" horses.... you could NEVER show them in a competition... and it's much easier to let the hors do what he wants instead of respecting the rider and doing what the rider wants.... and I'm not speaking about presure or forcing the horse I'm speaking of training that lasts years....

so come on... think a little bit next time befor you put us all in one pot!!!

  • .... and I watched this video where your red mare is doing slow and free pace!!!....

Do you kno when a hors is doing this??

    Well let me explain ...

The gait called piggipace apears because of wrong riding or a closed back... you build up wrong muscels that the horse is not able to run and in the right way!! That's why we use boots to build up right muscels from the beginning or to correct it when the horse is not running throug his whole body....

  • have you ever been on a dressage or jumping competition?? I think no...

You put the way of riding the gaits of the iclandc horse in a completly wrong light...

I am training and riding iclandic horses 15 years now!!... And if you know how to use the diffrent bits it's ok

  • yeah, your so right!!

  • I guess it would be true if one KNEW how the horse was to use his body in the best way, but is forcing him into a ventroflexed frame the best for the horse? Is making the horse's head vertical best for him? Probably not.

  • So true!

  • I aggree that riding with heavy contact on the reins is wrong, but I also think that what you call "natural riding" hurts the horse just as much! You can't help the horse to use his body in the best way, if you never let him take contact on the rein. But offcourse, it is quite easy to train a horse this way... you just let go of the reins and get transported!

  • Well, there is another way. I ride naturally, but I don't use horsemansship. There is a way between this kind of riding (like in the video) and using horsemansship.

  • behindert oda so ??
