This a video of tests with Sky-Sailor, a 2.6 Kg solar airplane developed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The goal is to stay airborne during many days, using only solar energy More info on http://sky-sailor.epfl.ch
I would like to see this implemented on a commercial airliner. Im sure it wouldnt be able to run completely off of solar but surely it could make a modified model more efficient.
I have a feeling there are batteries which are charged by the sun before launch and the flight time may be extended a bit by in-flite charging. It would be nice if I am wrong.
Add thermal detection and auto-thermalling (circling) and it'll stay up even longer.
