  • @kealakaiwong yup, gottah be sour, whole kalo taste blande and is hard to chew. i Hawaiian Samoan and eat both but i would prefer poi. and to the oddah usos on here talkin shit, wise up and be happy the haoles didnt want Samoa as much as they needed Hawai'i.Cuz believe me,they could have done the same thing to Samoa like they did Hawai'i.

  • Ho .. brah ... so u guys make pounding taro such a technical thing. Damn haoles ... eh ... just eat em whole like the rest of us ... brah like all us polynesians. Only da royalty in Hawaii needed their taro pounded long time ago because of the consequences of their mourning tradition ... so hey no more da kine teeth li dat. Taro taste better whole ...not pounded. Taste even worse fermented brah. No one ate fermented Taro in the day. They ate em fresh.

  • I just love how he said, "If I put this in a blender, it'd take alot longer." Chalk one up for the old ways!

  • This is so awesome I wish I was there partaking in the Poi pounding...:) Love the stuff.

  • That poi looks delicious. Just like uncle Kia down in Waipio makes em. Yumm. I miss poi...

  • Poi pounders have been excavated all over polynesia. I have two ancient ones, one from my grandparents. Hawaiians used poi pounders to do what else? POUND TARO INTO POI.

To say poi was only for royalty is just plain wrong.

So you don't like poi, okay no problem...

  • Poi and whole taro do not taste the same.

My grandparents and I never ate fresh poi. We preferred a few days old poi that had a miraculously expanded taste profile unlike fresh poi or whole taro.

I never heard that poi was only for the ali'i and not commoners. I have heard that certain varieties of kalo was for royalty only though.

As a staple, I much rather eat poi than pieces of taro...

  • say nifepartie...

if you neva pound before, you'd be the same as that "white guy" if not "worse".

    so no talk.

  • wow this white guy sucks. how bad can he be at listening to direct instructions?

  • Hey sorry bro. Was totally out of order on my part. It is difficult for all us Polynesians to balance the world we have grown up in and the cultures that have stood the test of time. No I admit I was wrong and Polynesians are all together - my father told me the errors of my ways in saying my earlier comment and I know now. No Samoans may appear as such but only because we wish to preserve what we know in this day and age before it disappears.
