Solitary Shell - Dream Theater - Bass Guitar Solo Cover

Dream Theater is one of my favourite bands, so it was only going to be a matter of time before I recorded one of their songs. This one -- a chapter from the 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence track is quite different from a bass perspective then a traditional John Myung line. It has a lot more breathing space and apart from the 11/8 instrumental section after the second chorus and the big unison right at the end, it hardly follows the guitar at all. It allows you to get really creative with what you play and suits my playing style well. But I do like doing the technical stuff like that unison so maybe I'll do a video with that sort of playing soon.
I put in a little bass solo and followed the melody after the first chorus. I know Myung doesn't play anything at all on that part, but I just improvised something to save me getting bored!

Hey - thanks for checking out the video. I record the bass using a Line6 POD XT. I then mix this file, along with the original song with the video file from my camera. Its pretty basic - but seems to do the job. Thanks again for watching! -Rob

Great cover man! i really liked it. excellent use of improvisation. did you find anywhere a partiture or a tab loyal to myung's bassline of these song?. I've been playing it for a while and improvising certain parts but I would really like to find what does he really do xD. I'm talking about the parts when petrucci and jordan begin to meke their solos
