Toscano Archives: Preserving Mexico's Memory
2010 AMIA Short Film and Video Competition Entree

The Toscano family has spent three generations preserving Mexico's documentary film legacy. Their archive is of great importance not only to Mexico, but to the world. Among their holdings are a vast collection of film materials pertaining to the Mexican Revolution, which document the complex social and political upheaval Mexico went through in the first quarter of the 20th century. Present and future generations can learn much from these lessons of the past.

The video is narrated by Octavio Moreno Toscano , grandson of Salvador Toscano, a pioneer of Mexican cinema and son of Carmen Toscano, writer, poet and filmmaker. He tells the story of Salvador Toscano and how he ended up collecting much of Mexico's historic film material from the Mexican revolutionary period. He also relates how his mother produced a seminal film, Memorias de un Mexicano (Memories of a Mexican) using fragments of the archive. Finally, he attests to the importance of the film not only for its educational value, but as an essential element in understading world history and Mexico itself. The short film is illustrated using material from the film Memories of a Mexican.
