Does anything work with alcoholism besides AA?

Some drinkers are allergic to AA and won't go as my companion, Doc, is. He explains why he drinks, to dumb himself down. Yes, he actually says that, revealing his over inflated sense of superiority which may be why he has been impervious to any thing I have tried on him to convince him to quit drinking. But my sons are showing signs of success using other methods. I think common sense has to be used if the drinker just keeps resisting what works for others.
