The exact origin of language is debated Also, no one denies that language changes, and that groups of languages had what we might call common ancestors. It is also not necessary to see Genesis 11 as teaching that God created a load of totally new languages, only that he confused the languages to the extend that people could no longer understand each other. It is interesting to note that some language experts such as Gwynne Dyer have made statements that lend support to Gen 11.

Languages evolved the way they are because they started out as dialects of one language, then slowly transformed into another form of speech distinct from the original. There was once a time when Bengali and English were the same language (Proto Indo-European). It has fuck all to do with a bunch of people building a tower.

If it bothers you that much go ahead and learn Ancient Greek and Hebrew. Otherwise, looking to the work of biblical scholars and experts in the ancient languages would be sufficent. You are just nit picking as far as I can see.
How exactly does the observable science and history rule it out? The confusion of languages has noted in many cultures throughout the world so it not that easily dismissed.

It's still not something that can be as understood as well as a native speaker could.
Also, no, that never happened. The idea that such a thing happened runs contrary to observable science and history (and common sense, pretty much).

I meant to reply to this but got distracted.
I am not saying that someone needs to learn the original languages (although that would be a good thing). All that is required is that people be prepared to do a bit of research before they open their mouth about something. Just looking a verse up in a commentary is often sufficent, but some of these so called free thinkers are not even prepared to do that.
As to your other point. Does a certain tower ring any bells at all?

Yes, I'm obviously lazy because I don't want to spend years of my life learning a new language. Also, wouldn't it take more effort to make more than 1 language?
-
But all of that is only a problem if you are lazy and/or unreasonable. I don't see why God should have to pander to attitudes like that.

It's still impossible to understand it like a native speaker. Much of the semantics, poetry, and overall meaning is lost in translation to the point that you need help much of the time to understand it properly unless you are a native speaker. God could've made us all one language group or made it 100% properly understandable in all languages, but no; he decided it would be a good idea to complicate things much more by doing this.

Why the hell you a christian be trawling through atheist videos on youtube. Are you THAT insecure about your own faith that you need validation for it?

@greatone1987
And why do atheists go trawling through the Bible and speak smack about it? Are they THAT insecure about their unbelief that they need validation for it?
