pretty much like raargh2 said because of an animation goof (notice how one of them still has the head opened and another still has those spikes in their brain.)anyway the Evas rely upon an umbilical cord to keep them supported with the massive amount of electrical power they need to operate.

@Zero4ph But why Nerv evas dont have those reg abilities (well 01 regenerated his arms a couple of times, but that is about it) and they rely on an umbilical cord for energy.

Because their primary function is to carry out Seele's version of Third Impact, which ends up utilizing Eva-01, also they don't have infinite energy they truly die only if their cores are destroyed. ;)
