Spotting a fake Dooney and Bourke handbag requires looking for a bag made of mostly hard leather, identifying the wide stitches of Dooney and Bourke, and checking for the monogram. Look for a classically shaped bag from Dooney and Bourke with tips from an image consultant in this free video on designer handbags.

  • STEP #5

Know that any charms or fobs that are attached to the bag will always be done with a small piece of leather, never with a chain, and will not be attached directly to the zipper.

  • STEP #4

Note where the bag was manufactured, and know that authentic Dooney and Bourke handbags are only manufactured in four places in the world: the United States, China, Italy and Mexico. Check the label for authenticity.

  • STEP #3

Look for the rivets of the bag to have "Dooney and Bourke" printed on them. Additionally, if the bag has a buckle, the words "solid brass" should be stamped on it. Authentic Dooney and Bourke handbags will always have an even number of feet on the bottom, if they have feet.

  • STEP #2

Check the logo. In the majority of bags, the "D" and "B" will be both front wards and backwards. The bottom of the "D" should align exactly at the middle of the "B." The lining of the bag should have a Dooney and Bourke label sewn into it. If it's glued in it's a clue that it isn't authentic.

  • STEP #1

Inspect the bag for quality of workmanship. Stitches should be small, straight and neatly sewn onto the bag. If the bag sports a duck, its bill will not be attached to his body in most Dooney and Bourke bags.
