It's not so much enjoying their old music once they go mainstream. If you do that you're a hipster. It's the new music. It changes from a sudden rise in popularity. I'm telling you it happens. Wish it didn't but it usually does. I get your point, there are bands who haven't done that, but the overwhelming majority have lead to a complete stereotype: that mainstream = end to good music.

Also just want to point out that I've never heard of any of those bands you mentioned...

Yes, many. But not most of people do that. I know many musicians that after they're gone mainstream, I still listen. Some of: Lucy Rose, Marcelo Camelo, Dry The River, Sattelite Stories and some, like Daniel James may never go mainstream but I'll still enjoy it...

No its not. But to find a band that "goes mainstream" and stays true to their great music is VERY rare. Not saying the Fleet Foxes would ever do it for the money by any means, but it happens all the time, so people automatically assume that mainstream = end to the good music they've been producing.
