What democracies? Dont speak vaguely, be specific. I know Portugal, Greece, and Spain have plenty of vacation. They all also have around 20% unemployment. 40 years ago all those countries were under dictatorship, also. Please inform us, did excessive vacation become the norm in those countries under the dictatorship or democracy? Much of the vacation, i believe was the work of trade unions, unions in the US were mafia fronts.

Vacation time has nothing to do with that really. Especially in the case of Greece their internal monetary controls are practically nonexistent. Its a silly thing, but yeah we do need more mandatory vacation.

Also running your own business is a recipe for not having a vacation at all on what business you're in? Working 9 to 5 is one thing..owning your own thing?..well that's 7 days a week.

And yeah, we do fetishize work here..which wouldn't be a problem if labor wasn't constantly stomped on.

Your joking right.... I mean the French and Greeks get the most vacation time out of any European country in Europe and they are really doing great. I agree being completely obsessed with material wealth is absurd, but happiness doesn't come from vacation time. Happiness is individual and thus needs to be pursued individually, if more vacation time is what you need to be happy, then maybe you should start your own business or work towards a promotion.
