I am gradually sorting through some of my ancient video tapes to log what is on them, and capturing some vintage clips whilst I do so.

Here is a comparison of the 'He-Man and the Masters of the Universe' first season episode "Game Plan", comparing the original version to that edited by Childrens ITV on Monday 14th January 1985. As with nearly all of the episodes on their original broadcast, it was edited for time, with several scenes either shortened or removed entirely. And as will most of the first-run episodes, the closing moral was also removed (never mind that children might have actually learnt something from the story!!).

I am still going through all of my old tapes and uploading various clips, so check back regularly!

  • can someone tell me what the point of this was

  • As an example of how episodes were edited in the UK. Sorry to offend you with it!

  • I hate when shows get chopped to pieces like that.

  • Sadly it was (and to an extent) very common with imported shows in the UK. Just wait till I get started on my A-Team recordings!!

  • Negator is the Man! isnt he? You know in another episode he returns and destroys he man.

  • Nice comparison. Very informative, but quite sad. I hate editing and censorship and I especially hate knowing that I'm missing out out on something. It isn't Orko's fish backfire, Negator lying about his transfer, or the moral ending that I care about, it's knowing that I'm viewing the work in its entirety.

So, do the UK censors feel it's their obligation to edit things, whether it needs it or not, or does UK programming have more commercials?

  • Do you know if CITV showed all 130 episodes of He-Man? So did they never show the end morals ever?

This is episode 54 of He-Man in season 1. Skeletor was not in this episode.

  • Oh man, what a shame. Orko was completely removed from the first scene.

  • I knew they cut the morals on ITV but never realized they removed so much other stuff as well. Do you have any more examples like this? And do you have more of the original UK release dates for He-Man? I would be very interested.

  • thats gangsta, i miss retro 80s jump offs!!! the versions sucked changing tho!!

  • What a shame. I hate when cartoons, TV shows, and movies are edited when they're aired.

  • I'm glad you showed us all this important infomation, I'll never watch that channel as long as I live. Say, could you do another one?

  • Battlecat could talk> Awesome!

  • That's the story with all American cartoons that are imported from America by networks like Jetix & CITV, they don't show episodes of programmes in their entirety but instead edit them for time to make them fit in the timeslot.
