American Health Journal interviews Dr. Sanusi Umar regarding the common topic of hair loss. Dr. Umar discusses hair loss in men, women, and children. He describes pattern baldness, the main cause of hair loss, as such: "your hair follicles in the area of baldness become sensitive to a substance called DHT—dihydrotestosterone—which is one of the breakdown products of testosterone... It responds by miniaturizing the hair." Dr. Umar also dispels the popular myth that pattern baldness is inherited from the maternal side of the family. He then goes on to talk about other varying sources of hair loss, such as iron deficiency and alopecia areata.
