In present-day Christianity, the concept of contemplation seems misunderstood by many people, both observers and participants. The tendency is to associate it with some other-worldly notions, such as monasticism, mysticism, or transcendentalism. As a result, contemplation is perceived as a highly privileged type of spirituality that is reserved for only a small segment of people who are truly enlightened. Moreover, even those who consider themselves to be contemplative tend to identify their way exclusively in terms of spiritual disciplines, such as prayer and meditation. Contemplation, however, is so much more. Yes, it does include such spiritual disciplines of a private, devotional nature. And, yes, it includes the experiential dimension that may be perceived as somewhat mystical or esoterictranscendent. But it cannot be relegated to only such categories. Contemplation, in the broadest sense, is an entire way of life. In a philosophical sense, it is an essential mode of being and operating. We may thus consider all aspects of life and spirituality from a contemplative perspective. So we speak of contemplative worship, contemplative prayer, contemplative study, contemplative work, contemplative fellowship, contemplative ministry, contemplative mission, contemplative spirituality, contemplative suffering, and practically everything in terms of the contemplative way. What, then, is contemplation, and why contemplation? Simply put, contemplation has to do with the way of knowing and perceiving realitythe reality of God, humanity, nature, and the universe. Thus, the contemplative way may be considered the most comprehensive way of relating to God, people, and all dimensions of life. Moreover, it may be considered the most authentic way of relating to all of life and reality.
Instead of trying to sell a book why not post it online and allow people to download it for free as an e-Book? Why make money off of religion?
