I hope you enjoy it. By the way, be sure to listen to all four minutes of the rapturous applause at the end of the last movement. You'll be amazed at its intensity. The audience knows it has just experienced something extremely special and they show it.
Where's the definitive performance? IMO it was Carlos conducting the Bavarian Staatsorchester in 1982. Check out the Orfeo CD (available from Amazon). You will find it nothing less than astonishing. Hard to believe, but it is superior (esp. the 4th mvmt) to this historic performance with the Concertgebouw. (Note: CK cared about respecting Beethoven's tempi so don't say that his interpretation is too fast. It may be too fast for your liking, but it was what Beethoven indicated and CK heeded.)
I prefer this version to Karajan's for the rhythm is accentuated more to my liking even though it is just slightly fast but not rushed.. but where is the definitive performance? .....In my head, I suppose..
