As much pain as she was in, she had to go to work, so that's where she was heading. It just took a while to cake some makeup onto her face to look half way to normal. The doorbell rang downstairs, followed by three loud knocks, and her heart jumped down into her stomach. If that was Nate at the door, and Mike was going to answer it, she'd be in deep once again.
Running out of the bathroom, and down the stairs, she ran past Mike who grumbled, and reached for the doorknob, her hair all in her face. Opening it, she faced and angry Nate. He barged right into the small hallway, and she shut the door.
"What are you doing here?"
"Better question, Branch. What are you doing here?" He asked, turning to look at her. "What's with the makeup, Branch? Who are you trying to impress?"
"No one." She said, crossing her arms. "I was getting ready. Woke up late. Sorry."
"Two days? What's going on, you alright?"
"I'm fine, Nate." Stella said, going over to the door. "I'll be right behind you."
"I doubt it, but whatever."
"Listen, bud, is there a problem here?" Stella's husband Mike asked.
"This isn't your issue, Mike." Stella said.
"Shut up, was I talking to you?" He looked back at Nate. "Got a problem here?"
"Be careful with the way you talk to me, tough guy. No problem what so ever. See you at work, Branch."

Nate walked out the door, with a very bad feeling. He sat in his car, just sitting in the driver's seat, and then the door to his partner's house opened, and her husband, that ass walked out to his car, got in, and drove off with such speed he coulda pulled him over in a second and slammed a ticket in his face. Getting out of his car, he walked up to the front door again, and opened it slowly, walking inside.
"Mike, now what? Isn't one bruise bad enough?"
He caught her walking down the stairs, slinging a bag over her shoulder.
"Not Mike. Nate. What bruise."
"What?" She asked.
"What the fuck was that supposed to mean?"
"Oh. That.. right. I was walking into the bathroom this morning as he had opened the door to walk out and it slammed me right in the face, hence the makeup. I would never walk into work with a bunch of grown men, and a big black eye. What are you doing in here anyway? I thought you left.." She crossed her arms again.
"Lets go. I'll give you a ride."
"I don't think my husband's okay with that."
"Well tough shit. Get a move on. Now." Nate said, opening the front door.

She was in the dog house now. And he wanted to keep her there. Some shit is up, he thought. And it really smells.
Stella sat in the seat next to Nate, staring out at the windshield.
"Husband's a charming guy."
"You caught him on a bad day." She said.
"Just like that door, huh?"
"End it, jerk."
"I can't. I'm buried in too deep. And I ain't getting out the easy way."
She rolled her eyes and pulled on her seat belt. Almost every bone in her body ached, but she sucked it up. No way in hell was she going to tell Nate what was going on at home.
Never mix home life with work life. Ever.
"So what color was the door? White? Like that lie?"
Stella pulled her hand gun out of the holster, cocking it in his face.
"I said end it." She hissed.
He raised his arms in defeat.
"Alright... Forget I showed a semblance of care."
Nate shoved his keys into the engine, and drove off as Stella situated herself, and the tears she wouldn't let escape her eyes.
"Thanks for caring. But, I didn't ask."
"Betcha didn't ask to be hit by that door too."
He's gonna figure it out.
He's not stupid.

Did you hear yourself, Stella? He's gonna figure it out.
He's not stupid.
