From the 1978 album "Legend".

Lyrics:

In the heart of the night
In the cool southern rain
There's a full moon in sight
Shining down on the Pontchartrain

And the river she rises
Just like she used to do
She's so full of surprises
She reminds me of you
In the heart of the night (x3)
(Oh, down in New Orleans)

There's a nightbird singing
Right on through till the dawn
And the streets are still ringing
With people carrying on

It's been so long waiting
Just to be here again
Anticipating
All the time I could spend
In the heart of the night (x3)

And I trust in your love never falling down
And I trust in your love
Just like I do in this town
Oh, never falling down
Never falling down

In the heart of the night
In the cool falling rain
There's a full moon in sight
Shining down on the Pontchartrain

And the river she rises
Just like she used to do
She's so full of surprises
She reminds me of you
In the heart of the night (x3)

And I'm so glad to be back in New Orleans
Please don't wake me, don't shake me,
If this is only just a dream
Cuz It's the only place I can face
That makes me feel so right
Below that Dixie moon and loving you
In the Heart of the Night

  • Ok, says who about Phil Hartman, bring it, ....I know how old I am, and about how old he was, so if so, factO, what did he do in terms of drawing for POCO. Facts, not speculation, and also, I loved Phil H too, and I very much liked/loved Poco. Thank you.

  • @lance1jcubsfan It is a fact that Phil Hartman designed the cover of the album shown on this video, as well as seveal others, including America's Greatest Hits album.

  • Ah! Summer 1979, 15 years old. This song and a summer night. Magic.

  • Wow, I can remember sitting on the beach looking out at the waves and the girls walk by. Now, I sit on the beach and watch my kids play and can listen to the same cool tunes on my i-pod. It's funny how time flies, but these songs never stop making me feel young again.

  • I first heard this song when I was 16 working at the library in Ft. Collins, Colorado sorting through the card catalog. I loved it then and I still do.

  • What a great song. When I first heard it in 1978 ( i was 20 yrs old then ). It has that Eagles sound.

  • '78, I watched Poco live in a concert hall made for symphony when this song came out. Wow, so good. Time machine

  • This songs reminds me of what it is about. The love of a place. I miss Louisiana will everything in me. The words of this tune choke me up at times. It reminds me of my youth, meeting my wife and most of all, the wonder of this incedible city.
