This was started in 1968, not 67, and finished in 1969. John wrote the song in India in 1968 and there is a May 1968 demo. Syd was down the hall at EMI when the Beatles recorded Sgt Pepper (same time as Piper) but he was not ever in the studio with the Beatles. Syd is not on this recording. (Neither is Paul or Ringo, for that matter.)
