im not exactly sure why the poster elected to blend the two recordings, im not really sure what his objective was. if it was to provide the listener with a more immediate comparison for adjudication purposes, he might have saved himself the trouble. There is no question who is the superior singer. Pavarotti had one of the most gorgeous textures of any singer, but im afraid he is not in bjoerlings class. none are. Jussi Bjoerling is probably the most perfect singer ever.

@EricRogg Yes Pavarotti blows Björling out of the water - 30 kg heavier - but Björling sings better!!!
Like Pavarotti to but don´t like stupid comments!

Great technical work in putting this together.

Btw, seems like some of you don't know Björling, and for those interested in the real duet - the one in the picture - it's the Pearl Fishers duet (Au fond du temple saint) with Björling & Merrill. I have never heard anyone even approach their version; the closest but still miles awa! is Stefan Islandi (!). If you're going to get something, make sure to buy Jussi Björling Edition: Studio Recordings 1930-1959, 4 cd's of classic repertoire, early stuff, lieder & Swedish songs. Absolutely awesome

I wonder what Robert Merrill would have to say about this - because it's his body! Anyway, two of the greatest of all time, no doubt, but so different. Björlings was a voice with a heavy, melancholic timbre, full of unshed tears, as many have said, very nordic in some respects, and his personality too. Pavarotti was a more typical spinto, with a range and power like few others and a light timbre. But Björling was unique, perhaps even greater than Caruso, his voice had perfect egalite. He was #1

@operalament You have summed up just perfectly what I felt when I listened to this the first time . Subsequent listenings make me ask, like you, what was the point of posting this? Pavarotti was a great tenor, but Bjorling is just superior on every count - musicality, voice control, attack, diction and timbre, to name but a few.
In a way, we were fortunate that Bjorling died at the very peak of his powers - we didn't have to hear him decline as did Signor P.

I take off my hat to whoever engineered this video - how on earth did they make it seem like a real duet between Bjorling and Pavarotti? Nevertheless, I feel that it confirms what I have long believed - Bjorling was the 20th century's greatest tenor by some margin. Yes, Pavarotti probably would have been the greatest had it not been for Bjorling, but Pavarotti's voice was darker, and somehow lacked the panach of Bjorling's.

Pavarotti was a wonderful singer. In his prime, he was A* quality - and while it is subjective, I believe he was in the top ten or so tenors of the last century. That good. It is a little unfortunate then, to pair him with Jussi Bjorling - who although no operatic actor - had a voice which was staggering beautiful - A** quality. Yet, make no mistake, both were very great singers and both were so far ahead of the pack.

@vitopiper Thank you!

@vitopiper Amen-just listen -say nothing
