The road is not that sandy - it's unsealed between Laverton & The Olgas. You could drive this in a 2WD, however, the drive is a lot more comfortable with the suspension in a 4WD as the road is quite corrugated in places and there are a lot of dry creek beds you drive through. I think Tjukiyirla was about 3 hours from Laverton, and it took about 10 hours to drive to Ayers Rock- although given how remote it is, we did feel obliged to undertake reconciliation and help out some broken down brothers

Looks quite sandy. How much kms is the unpaved section?

from the olgas to the WA border is ALL unsealed. I havent been past the border recently but it used to be totally unsealed also.
But PLEASE,if youve got a 2wd then take extreme care.get advice before taking the trip.
This country will kill the unprepared. What is graded and smooth today can be choppedf up and near pure sand in a few days.
Therers even places on the road 4wd cannot get through untill it either dries out or the grader comes..
TRUST me ,2WD ppl take extreme care.
