There are eight different white balance settings on the XSi, but only custom white balance give you the most accurate settings, based on exactly the light under which you are currently shooting, from the Magic Lantern DVD Guide to the Canon XSi

  • Can someone PLEASE help me? I am taking photos with tungsten light which is 1000 watts and I notice that the room and wall become **VERY** yellow. So I plan on adjusting the white balance manually. Question: Do I take a picture of the white card under an **IDEAL** environment (like outdoor but under soft sunligt) or do I photograph the white card in that "yellow" environment? Please help. Thank you.

  • @tttnytttny. You want to set the custom white balance (take a picture of the white card) under the yellow tungsten lights. That's the whole point—you're telling the camera that, under THIS light, THIS is white. Just watch the video!

  • @LarkPhoto If I may ask you again, why does the manual say that I am supposed to **zoom in** when I take a pic of the white card?

  • @tttnytttny What it means is that the white card should fill the entire frame when you take the picture.

  • @LarkPhoto I apologize beforehand for my stupid questions. But why zoom in? Why can't I just stand closer to the white card physically without zooming in?

  • @tttnytttny You can. That's what I'm saying—all that matters is that the frame is totally filled with the white card reflecting the tungsten light. if your card is big enough that that can be done at a wide angle, then that's fine. (Don't take anything your manual says too literally—that's why we sell these books and DVDs!)
