And I know I'm crowding the comments but lastly, I just wanted to say that maybe it takes a mentor that intervenes at younger ages so that certain influences can be curtailed.
Not as stating that art forms of other peoples are bad, but that art forms representing yourself and ones like you are GOOD!

I think the influence of having only one example of what art is, is not only stifling to the creativity of young minds but also acts as a conditioner that has them erase themselves from the picture.
It starts out subconsciously, but as that young black person matures it becomes part of their being. Set themselves aside from what is considered "Good" or what is "Normal" rather.
I come from a southern family of proud black folks though, so it just took someone giving me the blue pill to wake up.
I remember back when I was in my lil Japanese wannabe phase, it lasted from 6th grade til the middle of my sophomore year in high school; The only thing that brought me out of it was one day my moms asked me, "Why don't you draw any black characters?"
I sorta stepped back from myself and realized she was right. And my answer was simply, "I don't know." It was what always seemed right and no one ever questioned it, but when some who I respected dearly did, it snapped me awake.
Let us ask WHY?
