In what has become a long-standing tradition, the Jazz Band directors perform at the 23rd Annual Wissahickon Middle School Jazz Festival.

The Jazz band directors of the attending middle schools get together and put on a Jazz "improv" session at the end of the Jazz Festival.

Note that because of the 10-minute maximum video length on youtube, I've split this "improv" session into 3 parts, so I could post it in its entirety. Be sure to check out all 3 parts!

As introduced by the festival's announcer, Beth Smith, performing here are:

Mr. Dave Kenny, Strayer Middle School -- Piano
Mr. Alan Shugart, Milford Middle School -- Trombone
Mr. Dave Orehowsky, Pennfield Middle School -- Trumpet
Mr. Peter Neu, Pennbrook Middle School -- Trumpet
Mr. Bob Kennedy, Penndale Middle School -- Trumpet
Mr. Brian Stahl, Upper Moreland Middle School -- Tenor Sax
Mr. Bill Cain, Wissahickon Middle School -- Drums

Thank you, Gentlemen, and to your respective school's Jazz Ensembles, for a great evening of entertainment! We appreciate all the effort and long hours of practice!

Thanks also go out to Wissahickon Middle School for hosting this event, and kicking off the 2008 Jazz Season in style. Bring on those Friday nights!

  • I don't Need it on DVD, thanks. Are you going to be at the Feb 29 Concert at Strayer?

  • I'm afraid not. Pennbrook is playing in 2 Jazz fests next Friday night, Feb 29th. First at Spring-Ford Middle School, and then at the North Penn Knight of Jazz, all in the same evening. So, I will be occupied there.

  • Cool, DUDE! I am a drummer in the Strayer Jazz band and I played "I Wish" by Stevie Wonder. I loved Mr. Kenney's solo when he played it the first time and wanted a tape of it soooooooo bad! I am going to include this in my school's End of the Year Video if you don't mind!

  • I don't mind at all. I could probably supply this video to you on DVD if that would help you, rather than you having to "capture" it off of youtube. Write me back if that would be of help to you.

Best of luck to you and Strayer in all your Jazz endeavors.

And if Pennbrook and Strayer are at any more Jazz events together, I'll be sure to look for the Strayer drummer playing "I Wish".

My son is in the Pennbrook Jazz Ensemble, and plays Piano and Vibes.

    Thanks for your post.

  • Two names for that song..... If the lyrics are sung it's called "Duke's Place," but if it's done as an instrumental it's also known as "C Jam Blues" (Ironically enough it's usually played in B Flat)

  • I don't need a DVD, thanks, but iff you could record Strayer's performance on the 29th of February next week and post it on YouTube, I would be EXTREMELY Greatful!!! Are you going to be at Strayer on the 29th? We are hosting our own Jazz Festival.
