Magsudsod ay 'di biro"


Everyday, a group of kids in the province of Gubat, Sorsogon walk for more than an hour under the scorching heat of the sun to go to a pond that shelters their communitys main source of income: baby crabs or crablets.

Julius, Vicente, Marvin and Jose bravely stride through a mixture of mud, small rocks and dead corals while holding shovel-like nets in their hands to catch the crablets. They use these nets as a filter to separate the crustaceans from dirt and water.

The task is quite tedious for these young kids, yet they choose to suffer painful cuts caused by rough corals in exchange of the money that they earn from selling this seafood. Crab fingerlings are sold for P3.00 a piece to breeders from other provinces near Sorsogon.

The provinces crab industry has been affected significantly by this trade, forcing the local government to issue an ordinance that prohibits the catching and selling of these prized crustaceans. But this does not deter the catchers from working. The kids bear heavy responsibilities on their shoulders: both Marvin and Vicente have to pay for the medical needs of their loved ones, while Julius and Jose are breadwinners of their families.

mawalang-galang na po...ang brgy. BULAWAN po ay sakop ng bayan ng PRIETO DIAZ o PTO. DIAZ sa lalawigan ng SORSOGON..Hindi po sakop ng bayan ng GUBAT ang nasabing barangay. Ang Gubat po ay isa sa mga 14 bayan sa lalawigan ng Sorsogon,,isa rin pong bayan ang PTO. DIAZ.
