One of the highlights of the current Henry VIII exhibit at the British Library is this prayer roll (known as a 'bede') which was owned by the young Henry.
The roll is 4 metres long and over 12 cm wide. It contains a series of illustrations including of the Virgin and Child and the different elements of Christ's passion. Alongside this are prayers in Latin and rubics in English, which instruct the reader in how to perform devotions and lead a godly life.
The young Henry wrote a message to William Thomas, a groom of his privy chamber. He states,
'Willyam Thomas, I pray yow pray for me your lovying master, Prynce Henry'.
This implies that Henry gave the roll to Thomas or perhaps the roll was used also by his groom.
The British Library exhibit ends on 6th Sep so only a few days left to see this and many other amazing documents connected to Henry.
