anything modern was forbidden? they used modern tech to beat russians.... also define "modern". What you mean by basic freedom? education? the soviet-afghan war and also the war with Northern Alliance almost the infrastructure of the country, UN were donating money but the sanction cost them 10 times that.

treat women inhumanly? the Taliban picked up arms to defend women from the communists... They were in education especially in Medical Science. They did not let women out for a while for war.
