You sing with your ears on not your heart. In other words you focus on your voice too much when you sing. So it sounds flat and shallow. You don't HAVE to sound like him when you do a cover. Can tell you have a decent voice, so learn songs/make songs. Sing and just don't listen. You'll be surprised how well it sounds when you actually sing from within instead of on the surface.
