Elliott Carter discusses the 100th birthday celebration concert on 11 Decemeber at Southbank Centre, with Marshall Marcus. The concert features his solo piano piece Catenaires and his glittering piano concerto Diaolgues. As part of the Shell Classic International series, Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and conductor Pierre Boulez pay tribute to Carter with one of the leaders in contemporary classical music, Ensemble Intercontemporain.

  • it's too bad that the great composers didn't live half as long.

  • Elliott Carter's post-1950 music has yet to reveal itself to me. I love his cello sonata, but I am having trouble understanding most other works of his, like Night Fantasies, or even getting any emotions out of them. For example, I don't understand the whole tempo ratios thing in Night Fantasies. Can somebody please explain that to me? I wish him well, and hope that in my musical career I'll play a work of his, and it might thereby become easier to understand. Until then, I'll stick with Adams.
