The Lone Bird...

What would you do if you wanted to play with somebody who told you to get lost? This is exactly what happens to the Lone Bird, but she doesn't sit down, cry, and fall apart. She finds her own friends and her own way in the world!

Dianna L. Grayer Ph.D. has written a lovely children's book about choice, self-acceptance, confidence, and hope. The Lone Bird is about a sweet and innocent bird who is treated meanly by her peers and she's hurt and confused by their behavior. On her quest to understand, she cheers up when she hears a voice from the sky who supports her in her choice not to follow the mean birds. Ultimately, the Lone Bird meets birds that are friendly like her.

The Lone Bird is a story we all can relate to. We've all had people be unkind to us. Because the children feel empathy and compassion for the Lone Bird, the book offers youngsters the opportunity to explore these issues and concerns with your guidance. In the back of the book there are 33 questions for you to discuss with them. It's a therapeutic tool to help parents and teachers engage with children. They will learn how the child is affected by the story and how it parallels their lives. This way they can learn about their children's thoughts and feelings, fears and joys, and when they're hurt or scared or having a problem with their peers or others.

This book will appeal to children up to 8 years old, but it can be a tool to use with all children because of the messages and lessons. As a psychotherapist, Dianna refers to it with her young adults and older adult clients. They can see another way, and even though being at that crossroad might feel scary and isolating, making a choice of self-acceptance and respect for themselves is always the better outcome in the long run.

Dianna L. Grayer is a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist in private practice in Downtown Petaluma. She recently graduated from Meridian University earning her Ph.D. in Psychology where she is now teaching.
