Michigan State Spartans defeats Notre Dame at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis in 1979 to advance to the Elite Eight. Jud Heathcote clearly demonstrates his baskeball superiority against Digger Phelps in this matchup. Magic Johnson and Greg Kelser prove too much for the Irish. • @generalbullmoose - Exactly what I thought when I saw this. An incredible lineup for Notre Dame. And I rooted for MSU in this game, but ND had a great team.

  • There was A LOT of talent on this floor. Each team had three players that went on to spend substantial time in the NBA. For Michigan State, there was Magic Johnson, Greg Kelser and scam artist, Jay Vincent. For Notre Dame, there was Bill Laimbeer, Kelly Tripucka and Orlando Woolridge.

  • Michigan State gained all the momentum as a result of the play off of the opening tip. Kelser and Johnson ordered the MSU player to dunk it off the play to get all the early momentum.

  • Tripucka, Woolridge, Laimbeer, Hanzlik...what a lineup to beat!

  • Thanks so much for the video. What memories! I remember watching this game when I was just 7. Now, 32 years later, here it is. AMAZING!!!!!

  • i saw kelser today

  • Love the old NBC theme song that starts the video.

  • Great video! So very glad you posted it.

  • Digger Phelps actually had some very good teams at Notre Dame

  • Probably my favorite college basketball game ever. I graduated the same year as Magic (HS class of '77) about 40 miles away (Southfield MI), and of course was a huge fan. I can remember being so nervous watching these games, and rooting for MSU to go all the way. Fortunately, Magic never seemed nervous, and always played with such exuberance. Just a thrilling run to the championship.
