Here I'm showing the Hungarian Electric Bagpipe. It is made by Istvan Adorjan, a great piper and engineer. The chanter part of the set is wood and is exactly the same as a real chanter. The chanter has a "quick switch" touch sensor, the bottom right hole. This way the user can stop the sound with a single tap with the pinky finger. The chanter is connected to the box, which contains the electronics, speaker, the knobs and buttons, with a serial cable. The base sound is tunable to any pitch of any Hz from somewhere low F up to high C. No low E or D, unfortunately. This feature is especially useful when you want to
practice with an original recording of an old piper tuned to an unconventional pitch. The chanter can be used to practice the music of all kinds of Carpathian double-bore chanters including the Hungarian, Slovakian,
Slavonian (Northern Croatia and Serbia), Rumanian (Transilvania) and the
Hungarian Speaking Moldavians. With the Scale button you can select the most
common mixolydian, minor scales with or without flea-hole. For some notes it
is possible to waver the sound by tapping a sensor below the played note.
The drones can be switched on/off and there is a scalable metronome. With an
extra chanter it is possible to play the four-reed, two counter-bass,
Croatian Drava bagpipe music either.
I made this presentation for the request of the great Australian piper, Cory Dale.
In the meantime I saw this device with Croatian gajde chanter. I've learned from the maker that it can be used with a Macedonian/Bulgarian chanter, and it works with Scottish chanters as well.

  • How does the chanter work? Does it use a contact like the deager chanter or some other mechanism? The finger articulation is great!

  • It is similar technology as the Ross and Deger chanters with the difference that the contact metal piece is a small brass tube section with the diameter of a tone hole. The chanter is a real wood bagpipe chanter, with real holes. The maker told me that the base unit supports Highland and Bulgarian/Macedonian chanters, too. I have seen pipers using this system with Croatian (gajde) and Bulgarian (gajda) chanters.

  • The unit supports the "Highland/Scottish" bagpipe system and fingering. The Hungarian chanter has the same number of holes as a Scottish chanter and the spacing is approximately the same as a D or C Scottish Smallpipe (SSP) chanter. The unit can be used in any pitch, therfore, it may be used as a practice/electronic SSP chanter.

  • that's brilliant, miklos! Does the flea hole give semitones tho? Couldn't work it out from this video. The Budgie certainly seemed to enjoy it though lol all the best, hope to meet again some time. Donald L

  • Hi Donald! Haven't seen you for ages. The fleahole gives the semitones, yes. The only note that cannot be produced with this electric chanter is G#, which can be done by half-covering the back/high A hole. A number of old and excellent Hungarian pipers used half covering holes extensively, this cannot be simulated with tis device. All the Best, Miki

  • great idea for practice! and if there is a plug for headphones, bagpiper's neighbours will be completely happy! :)

  • Yes the box has two outputs: headphones and lines. With the lines output it can be connected to an amplifier and can be used in a folk-rock band. The hole thing can be hidden into a bag and would look like a real bagpipe. :)
