Performed by the Fennell Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra

easily one of my favorite pieces
the best version I've heard
8:14 minutes long

This is the last piece Chance composed. Supposedly, he died from being electrocuted by his backyards electric fence RIGHT after finishing the composition to take care of his dogs. Tragic and powerful foreshadowing, although probably unintentionally.

  • Wow, I get so many goosebumps from 5:06 to 5:44.

    Very chilling.

  • A stunning piece, so well crafted and full of genuine emotion. I played it at the beginning of my freshman year (back in 1996) in the college symphonic band and was very moved by it. It's one of those pieces you don't forget.

  • Had the distinct honor of being in a clinician with Frederick Fennell in 1983 when I was in college and this was one of the numbers. The man was a conducting genius

  • The wind ensemble at my High School played this last year. We sounded so great :) I loved trilling in the high high register on clarinet :)

  • Died at 39...imagine the things he might have written...Thank you for what you left behind, Barney! RIP

  • Actually, check out the "Overture for a Musical Comedy" - it was published in 1997, and the story is that it was a work of Chance's that was found after his death. We just did a recording session of Chance's work - The Elegy is one of my favorites.
