I perceive your last rites,
Embattled brain.
You wish to be liquid,
Translucent puppet.
But you wont be able to change anything.
Dark side, it is my shadow
Dissolved in eternity
And the star is made of ash.
Your internal demon
Confronts your hours.
Undercover assassin,
Your worst enemy.
You wish to leave yourself,
But your life inspires jealousy.
(Ambig: alt translation: But your life (subj.) would like that.)
You love your cord already.
And the star rises.
Don your soul of light
Joust, turn, fall.
Don your mysterious garb
Joust, turn, fall.
Beneath your soul, a bitter grievance;
Bandage and present this complaint;
Don your soul of light.
Within you everything is but weakness
Your crystalline heart
Breaks at the slightest outburst of
laughter and tears
To the dead who bring dice
(Ambig: alt translation: To the dead, what do dice matter)
The sun, your symbol, will never slip away from you,
Only for the eternal.
Internal references: fil and tournoie are poetic, slightly ambiguous words which connote hanging. The song is widely considered to be about suicide. Tournoie also connotes an internal struggle, which is further suggested by fantôme intérieur. Panser (bandage) also means to groom (as a horse), which a knight might do, which further reinforces a reading of tournoie as joust. Additionally, Farmer has a fascination with horses and cavalry as depicted in her earlier video and album imagery. Fil also references Et Tournoie to another song on Anamorphosée, Alice, the spider pendue au bout de son fil (hanging from her thread). Emblème translates rather literally as device in the sense used as the symbol on a knights shield; the sun was the device of Louix XIV. Generally, an emblème is used to signify an authority, a profession, or a party.
This is a translation for literal meaning. Although I have chosen some English words for sound and poetry, meaning has been given primary consideration, and this translation will not fit the music well. If you would like a more poetic interpretation, for your karaoke rendition for example, let me know.
