Canadian Dave Somerville put this group together and from a spot on Arthur Godfrey's "Talent Scouts", The Diamonds got a recording contract first with Coral and then with Mercury Records. Their first hit was this, "Little Darlin", a cover of a song written by Maurice Williams who had originally recorded it with The Gladiolas (later Maurice would go on to more fame with The Zodiacs). The Diamonds took the tune all the way to #2 in the nation in March of 1957.

  • There are several recordings of this song as sung by the Diamonds posted on youtube, including several video clips from the 50's, and somebody complains about every one I've seen. How come?

  • @Sheboggie1 What are the specifics of the complaints regarding "Little Darlin"?

  • @ Nocaro , I'm duly chastened after reading your footnotes. It was late, I saw "original" and your usage makes sense now that you kindly explained it. But to the casual perusal it is slightly misleading. By all accounts these guys were a jovial lot having fun with "their music". But it stll doesn't negate the fact that they were a quartet of Pat Boones covering artist, Okay, lol, nobody was as bad as Boone. BTW, subscribed to your channel. I'm very impressed with its width and depth. Congrats!

  • @TheReadsbororegular No problem. Not many people read my footnotes so it's easy to see how you would interpret my notations. I think The Diamonds got a lot of help early on from either Dick Clark or Brook Benton or both (especially with regard to "The Stroll"). I've always seen them as something akin to the Four Lads with a little R&B in them.

  • This ain't the "original". That would be Maurice Williams & The Gladiolas and written by Williams. The ONLY Diamonds hit that wasn't a cover was "The Stroll".

  • @TheReadsbororegular BTW, you might want to read my comments attached to each video. This channel is about as close to an encylopedia of the Great American Songbook as you'll find on YouTube.
