A Hindu Priest, Ida Pandita Empu Jaya Acharyananda, was giving a lecture to a gathering attended by a social clan families members, Dadya Kubontubuh-Kuthawaringin, on August 2, 2009 at a village named Pesangkan. This village located at Kecamatan Selat, Kabupaten Karangasem, Province of Bali in Indonesia. The topic of the lecture is The Essence of Pitra Yadnya. Pitra means spirit (atman) of the deceased and yadnya in this contex means ritual. The lecture was organized to refresh the knowledge and understanding about The Pitra Yadnya for the people involved in the preparations of the ritual. The preparation has been started since May 9, 2009 while the peak day (climax) of the ritual was done on August 21, 2009 and the ritual was finish on September 11, 2009. The basic philosophy of Pitra Yadnya is to purify the five layers of the body (1.Annamaya Kosa, 2.Pranamaya Kosa, 3.Manomaya Kosa, 4.Vijnanamaya Kosa, 5.Anandamaya Kosa) and the spirit (atman) of the deceased. The purification ritual consist of two stages, the first stage is called Ngaben (Cremation) to purify the first and the second layer of the body. The second stage is called Mamukur, to purify the third, the fourth and the fifth layer of the body of the deceased. After all five layers of the body have been purified, does the spirit (atman) of the deceased united to The God (moksha) ? The answer of the question is maybe yes or maybe no, it depend on Karma of the deceased during his or her living as human being.
