2/2: The concept of patches also reminds me of the saying Professor Richardson has mentioned in class about the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Nonetheless, it is interesting to see how hackers can take advantage of such updates, of which are intended for regular consumers.

1/2: This relates to topics taught in MGD421 Technological Entrepreneurship, in regards to rushing to market a just sufficient product, rather than a product providing a full solution due to the highly competitive environment. Hence, releasing patches for software or game updates enables companies to follow-up with their just sufficient product launches.

until i read this section on witiger.com and watched this video i was under the impression that patches were the result of pressures from the technological environment. I thought companies would release the best product they possibly can and then when they come up with some kind of improvement, they send everyone an update. now i understand that i was wrong. in the IT industry companies can't really wait until the product is perfect because of the competitive environment.

I remember the Tylenol incident that happened a few years ago which relates to this topic. Essentially, a call back was made for the Tylenol that were made in (w.e date) due to a chemical imbalance in the tablets. Tylenol informed purchasers by making phonecalls (I guess to be discrete) and asked them to send it back to the supplier. The demerits of Tylenol's move is that the leak of this information to other major competition could bring them down if competition decides to use it against them.

The fact that companies don't have enough time to test out their initial software, and are relatively pressured to release it in such haste, proves that having a first mover's advantage might not always be an advantage. It is true that they would be the first out there, but other companies can now learn and launch a newer software which does not require constant updates in the from of patches.
It's interesting how such delicate information can be exploited so horrifically.

Patches exist to make it easier to combine several pieces of software together and makes a cost effective way for companies to alter their software without creating a brand new program. It is also used by video game companies to update the bugs in the game without releasing a brand new game.

I like the analogy of toyota cars and patches. This makes it easier to understand what patches are because most computer users think that it is just a fix without fully understanding it's threat to the social network. Patches is a like a double edged word because "it allows the hackers to understand the circumstances" but also fixes problems at the same time.
