One cannot deny that ideas can come into conflict. And one cannot deny that there is a clash in the west alone right now between secularism and religion. Nor can one deny that there is a conflict between secularism in the west and Islamic ideology in the Middle East. Why then is it so ridiculous to think that civilizations can clash? You'll have a hard time convincing my French friends who have seen this clash first hand in France.

Edward Said was a Christian Palestinian. Remember, some of the oldest Christian traditions come from the Middle East.... Please check your facts before you make ad hominen attacks.

Maltseff, what you have just said strengthens further what Said said. That the West mainly sees Islam through distorted, Orientalist, lenses. Also, correlation alone is not sufficient to prove that what you said must mean there is a 'cultural clash'. There could be a clash in some areas, but this is created by powerful people to make Islam seem threatning so regions, like Iran, can be dominated for oil. More people should be aware, of Edward Said - one of the greatest thinkers of our time.
