This song is listed in a few places as containing one of the worst lyrics ever. I think it is brilliant and obviously some folks can't deal in metaphors. Peter is a bizarre dude but his comparing love won/love lost to a monkey being rewarded or shocked as punishment is entirely genius. 'I don't like it but I guess I'm learning'. I am awed by this song.

Truly - It is what it is. It is very likely much more that my simple explanation. It means this to me because I saw this as a metaphor for my own dealings with the cruelty of women. Billy Joel's 'She's Always A Woman' is another interesting example. The woman he talks about in this song is psycho and yet - he worships her.

The brilliance of this song never ceases to amaze me.It's all about human evolution.We were monkeys,until "something knocked me out the tree,now I'm on my knees".We went from being wild animals to worshiping gods.Even as we develop,the "monkey" part of us remains,pulling us down,like the midgets in the video.We must "shock the monkey" to evolve further.
