This video demonstrates how to properly fit and use a slip collar. I do not recommend using a slip collar on a small breed dog, if you have a small dog, go get an "Easy Walk" harness.
If you have any questions at all, find a professional near you to help further. The leash walking technique in this video is mistake proof, it is a method I use for all dogs and I get results within 10-15 minutes, it teaches your dog to focus on you and watch your movements. Do not hesitate, if your dog is focused, they will not get a correction. You must turn quickly and walk in the opposite direction, if you go slow you are telling your dog you are not sure, then they will make the decision for you.
I use slip chains for the "popping" sound, ( this can also be done with lots of tags on a flat collar or martingale in some dogs) and they must stay loose at all times. They are NOT to be used to "choke" your dog. Do not jerk or pop upwards with any piece of equipment on your dogs neck, this will only hurt your dog. Your dog's body does not move when you "pop" upwards, just their heads do, thus causing injury to their necks.

  • Why not just do this on a normal collar, or harness? I have just as good results doing stop-starting with dogs. It seems to me that with the slip/check chain so high up the dog's neck, you're automatically creating pressure around his trachea, which I don't condone.

  • @mydogkanskidrums If you notice there is no tension when used correctly thus creating no damage. If used correctly it is always slack, the only correction is a "quick" correction if the dog is not focused, not constant tension like you get on a flat collar. This demo is for "power pullers" that are not phased by a "padded" correction. I do however agree, if you don't know how to use one properly, you should not use it. That I would not condone.

  • @TrainingByTara Sure, and for dogs that pull I appreciate that pulling against a flat collar can be even worse. But I still don't see why any aversive correction needs to be used. As we learn more about learning theory and dog behaviour, it's clear that the only corrections we need are insistent, instructive punishments, e.g. standing still if the dog pulls, walking back 5-10 steps if he carries on. I don't know, it's just a piece of equipment that can be used dangerously thus why use it ever?

  • @mydogkanskidrums I am sure you have seen (as all trainers have) many owners that give up walking a dog because they cannot handle them on a walk. They will give their dog up rather then spend a prolonged period of time to get them to walk well with a padded correction. A vicious circle then develops, no walking, more frustration, more destruction, more aggression. My goal, teach them now and save them from losing their homes or worse, being killed for frustration that builds from no exercise.

  • Thanks Tara.. id like to start using a slip collar with my boxer.. currently i use a gentle leader but she still pulls like crazy and due to the pressure on her short nose she starts snorting very very loudly!!. id like to use the slip collar however she just doesnt stop pulling and lunges at anything that moves especially barking dogs behind their fences, shes fine with people walking past and if i change direction she walks perfectly next to me , change again to original direction she pulls!!

  • @gbx78 try making a hard left into her when you change direction. You should not talk to her or give her eye contact when correcting. Make sure you turn into her head and neck area, not her mid body as this will get you both wrapped up in the leash! :)

  • Great vid. Funny how people are prejudiced against the slip chain. I use slip leads for training and no one cares about that and they are the same tool. Just so happens one is long and nylon while the other short and chain.

I was taught clicker training which is effective, but when I leash train I leash train both the person and the dog as many times the owners can't clicker train the dog to stay with them, but the moment I place my hands on the leash the dog stops pulling.

  • I think you should do this with an untrained dog so we can all see.

  • Wow, check the anxious body language on this poor dog. Get a clicker and treats and lay off the yanking.

  • i like choking my dog

  • Hello, my friend grooms and trains dogs, and she has been helping me leash-train my dog with a slip collar. I'm very confused by the quick turn and walking in the other direction, and have not been doing it since we finished class. When am I supposed to do the quick turn, why, and should I still be working on this with my dog? It's been a week since class was finished. Please advise. Thanks!

  • @TrainingByTara I have definitely seen this and it is a downward spiral. But that doesn't mean we can use positive punishment/negative reinforcement at will. We need to educate owners to proper training standards and practises- ones that may take a few sessions longer but will build a much happier relationship between them and the dog.
