Part 1 of 5 parts.

( please be patient while they are uploaded)

The first Art Deco ship, that proved to be the most successful first class liner of its age.
The fore runner to Normandie and ever ship that came after first took the Ile-De-France as the bench mark.

Ships like Titanic and Olympic and akin tried to imitate grand houses of the landside, the Ile De France imitated nothing and was for the first time to set Liner Style which itself became copied on land.

  • My father sailed back home on the Ile de France in March of 1945 as a convescent after many months of combat before and during the Battle of the Bulge. His feet were severly frozen.

He was PFC Audrey Clayton , 1st Army, 9th infantry Div, from Wynne, AR. The war was hell for him.

He said there wasn't a dry eye among those battle hardened soldiers when they steamed into NY harbor and could see the Statute of LIberty again after many months of fighting. God bless our WWII vets.

  • I just got a Email from the author John Maxtone-Graham that the Ile De France was really scrapped. I am sad, after being in a ten year illusion. Ile De France was really a "NEW" Liner.

  • 2 things: 1, its been almost 2 years, when is the next part coming out. 2, regarding Ile De France, she was a very pretty Ocean Liner. The French Line built stunning Ocean Liners, even Normandie & France.

  • The first piece of music i mean!!

  • hey what is this song called and who done it?? Thankyou!!

  • Hello, just still wondering if you are ok and when we might see Part II of this fabulous epic on the Ile de France!

  • you konw, it's almost been a year & a half were are the others.

  • The original high style interiors were toned down in the mid-1930s and again after WWII. The Ile's interiors as built were incredible but like the ss Nieuw Amsterdam, her post-war interiors as seen in the film 'The Last Voyage' were restrained and not nearly as dramatic. 7:32 is actually CGT's ss Paris w/her old-style quadrant lifeboat davits.

  • Hello, good friend. I have waited with great anticipation for Part II of this masterpiece on the Ile. Is everything ok with you and the project? John McCall

  • The music towards with end is too dark.
