ALCINA "Tornami a vagheggiar" Nathalie Dessay

I saw this prod 7 times ... it will remain one of the best opera prod I ever had the chance to attend ... stunning singing, acting, design ... At the last perf Nathalie hit a glorious high G at the end of the aria !!!... "just for fun" she said backstage afterward ... audience went crazy !!

Sour Lemon: Joan ALWAYS wore very elaborate, period costumes. Most sopranos are built such

that a skimpy, modern costume would render them ludicrous. Nathalie is lucky in her physical size. However, a French maid's outfit is certainly not REALISTIC for the time in which Handel's opera is set. That being said, I'll listen to Joan Sutherland AND Nathalie Dessay no matter what they are wearing. Enjoy both interpretations.

Natalie Dessay's Alcina is astonishing, great, glorious, fantastic, wonderful and lots of other nice things ^^ That high G in the end was... No words for that!

This is an E not a G ... she did the G "for fun" only at the last performance ... I was there but did not tape it unfortunately ... it was ... incredible ... never heard something like that before or after in a theater ... weird in a way ...

Joan Sutherland is one of my favorites but althou her performance of this aria was great for her time I must say that these more historically informed performances make baroque music and great artists like Dessay REALLY shine!!! I just lover her in this!

Wow... gotta love Natalie Dessay! That high E was fantastic! And I LOVE her acting - I sometimes find that opera singers are a bit too stilted in their acting, like they feel they can excuse away a lack of physical reactions because of their singing (and I'm not just being sour, my voice teacher says I'm not expressive enough all the time). But Dessay is just so willing to really ACT like the character! I really liked that kiss, it shows she's not at all afraid to embrace the role. Brava!!!
