Black River Cheese Company was established in 1901 as a co-op for local dairy farmers. It continues to serve the same purpose to this day, operating from the same site on the banks of Black Creek, near Milford. The new building was erected following a devastating fire in 2001. It serves as the cheesemaking facility and store, where locals and tourists regularly stop for traditional treats like cheese curd and ice cream. Black River Cheese is known for its award-winning cheddars, including the popular new favourite: maple cheddar, made with local maple syrup. The "cheese factory" is now run by managers Jim Atchison and Bill McKendry and cheesemaker, Jonathon Aulthouse.
